Using A Mobile Phone Whilst Driving
Driving and Talking on the Phone
Do people enjoy taking
unnecessary risks? Many of us still do by talking on our mobile
phones and driving at the same time. People still don’t understand
that they shouldn’t be driving and talking on the cellular phone at
the same time.
Many different studies have
been made with different results. What these studies do know is that
80% of accidents are caused by distracted drivers, and these
distractions only needed to be of about 3 seconds. The problem is
that everyone knows that using your cellular while driving is
distracting and usually for longer than 3 seconds. Some of the
younger generation even sends text messages while driving. A recent
survey indicated that out of 1200 people interviewed, 80% of them
had used the cellular while driving.
Do people not understand
that even the road safety bill was approved on November 8th of 2006,
or are they just ignoring it. Because I still see a lot of people on
their mobile phone while driving. They are definetly putting their
lifes and the lives of other people at risk.
The New Bill
The first section of the
bill that was enforced was the section 26. This covers "requirement
in the control of vehicles with regard to mobile telephones…." This
section endorses the disqualification of using a cellular phone
while driving. Up until now it has been a fixed penalty offence. But
now the legislation has added 3 points that penalize your license as
well as the fixed fine.
To make things clear let’s
say you get caught using your phone 4 or 5 times, under the new law
you could lose your license.
The rest of the law contains
measures that are made to reduce casualties and obtain better safety
on Britain’s roads.
Some of these other measures
are:
• Prohibiting the
use of radar and laser detectors – These gadgets detect speed camera
and radar signals and are able to warn the driver that there is
radar activity nearby. (this does not affect GPS devices though)
• Points against
your license for speeding, etc.. The points given depend on how much
you were over the speed limit.
Another big change is that
this new act will let the Secretary of State require Drinking and
driving offenders to take the driving test again.
There are other parts to the
section of the bill that will continue to take effect throughout the
year, but you must know that the mobile phone law is in effect now!
So you must be careful. Cellular phone usage while driving in
Britain is against the law and drivers need to abide by the sections
of the new law. To see more information on this topic and others
